How to judge a car insurance company

Price is one factor. Licensing, complaints, financial strength and claims handling matter too.

6 min read

Two insurers can charge similar prices and treat you very differently when you file a claim. A few public sources help you see beyond the price.

Five things to check

  1. Licensing: the insurer (and any agent) is licensed in your state. Check your state insurance department.
  2. Complaints: the NAIC complaint index compares complaints with the company's size.
  3. Financial strength: ratings from agencies such as AM Best, S&P, Moody's or Fitch.
  4. Claims experience: independent claims satisfaction studies and reviews from people who actually filed claims.
  5. The policy itself: coverages, exclusions and endorsements.
