How to switch car insurance without a gap
The order of steps that avoids a lapse, a double charge or a surprise bill.
Switching insurers is usually simple, as long as you do it in the right order.
Steps
- Buy the new policy and choose a start date.
- Get the new ID cards and policy documents.
- Tell your lender or lessor if the car is financed or leased.
- Cancel the old policy effective the same day the new one starts, in writing if possible.
- Check that you receive any refund of unused premium.
- Remove old ID cards from the car and your phone.
Watch for
- Cancellation fees or short-rate penalties in your old policy
- Autopay that keeps charging after cancellation
