Hi there,
This issue's term: split liability limits
On your declarations page, liability limits often look like three numbers, such as 50/100/50. In thousands of dollars, that means:
- $50,000 for injuries to any one person you injure,
- $100,000 total for everyone injured in one accident,
- $50,000 for damage to other people's property.
Your state sets a minimum, and some minimums are low compared with the cost of a serious crash. Full guide: What do liability limits mean?
Check your own policy
Find your uninsured and underinsured motorist limits. Are they lower than your liability limits? Many drivers don't realize they can be set separately. Write the numbers down before your next renewal.
Consumer note
Getting a quote far below everyone else's, from someone who only accepts payment apps or gift cards? That's a classic fake-policy scam. Check the company and agent with your state insurance department first.
