How to compare car insurance quotes fairly
Same drivers, same cars, same coverage, or the comparison means nothing.
The most common mistake when shopping for car insurance is comparing quotes with different coverage. A lower price often means lower limits, a higher deductible or a missing coverage.
Keep these identical
- Drivers and their information
- Vehicles and how they're used (commute, miles per year)
- Liability limits
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist limits
- Collision and comprehensive deductibles
- Extras like rental and roadside
Then compare
- Total premium for the same policy term (six months vs. a year)
- Payment plan fees
- Discounts applied, and which ones depend on things like a telematics app
- The insurer's complaint record and claims experience
