When to shop for car insurance

You don't need to shop every month, but some moments are worth a fresh comparison.

Good times to compare

• A renewal notice with a big price change
• Moving, especially to a new state
• Buying, selling or paying off a car
• Adding a teen driver, or a driver leaving the household
• Marriage, divorce or a change in commute
• A ticket or accident dropping off your record

Before you switch

Have the new policy in force before you cancel the old one, so there's no gap in coverage. A lapse can raise future prices and may break state law.
