Choosing a deductible

How a higher deductible changes your premium, and how to choose one you can afford.

4 min read

The deductible is what you pay toward a collision or comprehensive claim before insurance pays the rest. A higher deductible usually lowers your premium, but only makes sense if you could pay it tomorrow without hardship.

A simple way to decide

  1. Ask for quotes with a $500 and a $1,000 deductible.
  2. Note the yearly difference in premium.
  3. Divide the extra deductible ($500) by the yearly savings. That's roughly how many claim-free years it takes to come out ahead.
  4. Make sure you have the higher deductible set aside in savings.

Also consider

  • Comprehensive and collision can have different deductibles
  • Some states and insurers offer zero-deductible glass coverage
  • For an older car worth little, dropping collision may be worth discussing
